The Fate of the Galaxy Dev Team is an all-volunteer group from the FreeSpace modding community at Hard Light Productions. The project in its current form began in 2007, when chief1983 took over a string of earlier, unreleased Star Wars conversion attempts and the team decided to throw out the inherited art and remake every ship from scratch. A 2009 hard-drive failure wiped a senior artist's models and set the art department back years; the team rebuilt them to a higher standard, ran private betas from 2018, confirmed working multiplayer and standalone servers in 2022, spent 2023-2025 on balance, optimization and polish, and released Fate of the Galaxy publicly on October 30, 2026. The credited core includes chief1983 (project lead), Brand-X (senior artist), TopAce (mission design), swashmebuckle (music and writing), zookeeper (model conversion, art and scripting), CountBuggula (web and communications), niffiwan (code), wookieejedi (mission design, scripting and beta management), Limbert and Dark Visor (senior artists) and bobbtmann (senior contributor); the full list is in the game's credits. The team says every asset is made by people, accepts no donations, and works closely with other volunteer projects such as XWVM and TFTC. Fate of the Galaxy is a fan work and is not associated with Lucasfilm or Disney.
