Question 1

Is Fate of the Galaxy free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely. It is a volunteer fan project that takes no donations, and nothing is sold inside it.

Question 2

Is it an official Star Wars game?

Accepted Answer

No. It is a fan-made total conversion and is not associated with Lucasfilm or Disney. It has no licence from the rights holders, which is why it is free and distributed only by the team.

Question 3

Do I need FreeSpace 2?

Accepted Answer

No. It runs on the open-source FreeSpace Open engine and the download includes everything; FreeSpace 2 is not required.

Question 4

How big is the download?

Accepted Answer

On Windows the zip is 3.49 GB and extracts to about 9.3 GB. On Mac (86 MB DMG) and Linux (79 MB zip) the official download is the Knossos launcher, which then downloads the game; budget a similar amount of free space.

Question 5

Can I use a joystick, HOTAS, gamepad or VR headset?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The developers support up to four input devices at once, head tracking and VR. Gamepads and joysticks are bound in the game's Options; mouse and keyboard work too, with a toggle between maneuvering and aiming modes.

Question 6

Does it have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, LAN multiplayer plus a few community standalone servers. A PlayBound party puts your group on one virtual LAN so the in-game LAN browser works across the internet; PlayBound does not run dedicated servers for it.

Question 7

Why does Knossos show up on Linux and Mac instead of the game?

Accepted Answer

That is how the developers ship those platforms: the official Mac and Linux downloads are the Knossos launcher, and the game is installed from Knossos' Explore tab. On Linux, Knossos also needs the .NET 6 runtime.

Question 8

What are the system requirements?

Accepted Answer

The developers do not publish any. The bundled Windows engine build needs a 64-bit CPU with AVX and the engine needs OpenGL 3.2; the team says integrated graphics can run it smoothly after lowering a few options.

Question 9

Does Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy has multiplayer. You can host a game on your own PC. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher. It also supports LAN play. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
