Brawlhalla is ridiculously good at turning a simple premise into an almost bottomless fighting game. The controls are approachable enough to start throwing people off platforms within minutes, but movement, weapon matchups, dodging, recovery, and spacing give experienced players an enormous skill ceiling. Add eight-player chaos and cross-platform play, and it works equally well as a competitive fighter or a game-night brawl.
Genuinely free
No trial, no paywalled campaign, no pay-to-win, no cosmetic treadmill. Free means free, forever.
Finished enough to enjoy
Playable and satisfying start to finish today — not a promising alpha you should check back on.
Actively maintained
A release or meaningful commit within the last twelve months. Someone is still looking after it.
Stands on its own merits
Good enough that we would recommend it even if it cost money. Free is not the reason it is here.
High quality only
We cut through free-game noise and only platform games that are actually good. Volume is not a goal.

Fight your way to the top

Optimized competitive setup with tournament stage clarity and frame-perfect controller deadzones.
Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platform fighter from Blue Mammoth Games where warriors from different eras, worlds, and even entirely different franchises meet in the halls of Valhalla. The basic objective is familiar: damage your opponents, knock them off the stage, and be the last fighter standing. What makes Brawlhalla work is how much depth it manages to build on that incredibly simple foundation.
The game currently features more than 50 playable Legends, each built around different weapon combinations, stats, and signature attacks. Rather than giving every character a completely separate moveset, Brawlhalla's weapon system creates a common language between Legends while still giving each one its own personality and playstyle.
Pick up a sword and you're playing a very different game from someone wielding a rocket lance, bow, gauntlets, blasters, or scythe. Weapon pickups also make matches dynamic: losing your weapon or successfully forcing an opponent to drop theirs can completely change the flow of a fight.
Movement is arguably the heart of Brawlhalla. Players can dodge, dash, jump, recover from the edge of the stage, chase opponents through the air, and manipulate their positioning constantly. At a high level, matches become incredibly fast exchanges of movement and prediction rather than simply trading attacks.
The game supports a huge variety of formats. You can play 1v1 and 2v2 ranked matches, casual free-for-alls, custom games, experimental modes, and numerous party-oriented formats. Custom rooms can accommodate up to eight players, making Brawlhalla particularly good when you have a group of friends who want something competitive without taking it too seriously.
That eight-player support is also where Brawlhalla becomes gloriously chaotic. Four, six, or eight people occupying the same arena creates a completely different experience from the game's competitive 1v1 environment. Platforms become crowded, attacks come from everywhere, and someone inevitably gets launched off the screen while everyone else starts laughing.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is the game's competitive scene. Ranked modes, tournaments, dedicated esports events, and a substantial professional community have turned Brawlhalla into a serious platform fighter for players willing to learn its mechanics. Ubisoft and Blue Mammoth continue to support competitive events, including the annual Brawlhalla World Championship.
The free-to-play model is also relatively straightforward. Nine Legends are available in a rotating free selection, while players can unlock additional Legends using in-game gold earned through playing. An optional All Legends Pack unlocks the roster permanently, while crossover characters and cosmetics provide additional monetization.
And Brawlhalla has become remarkably accessible. It supports full cross-play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, so a group doesn't need to own the same hardware to play together.
That accessibility is a huge part of why the game has lasted. It can be someone's first fighting game, a competitive player's main game, or the thing a group of friends opens for twenty minutes when they want to beat each other up.
The game is also very much alive. As of 2026, it continues receiving new Legends, balance changes, seasonal events, crossover content, tournaments, and gameplay features.
We picked Brawlhalla because it's one of the rare free games that can genuinely serve as someone's gateway into competitive gaming. You can hand a controller to someone who's never played a fighting game, throw eight people into a room, and have a ridiculous match almost immediately. But if somebody gets hooked, there's an entire competitive rabbit hole waiting underneath that first chaotic match. For PlayBound, that's valuable. It's not merely a free alternative to Smash—it has developed its own identity, community, esports scene, and enormous player base. It's a game that can introduce someone to the genre casually and still give them a reason to be playing years later.
