The N64 split-screen classic, rebuilt for 16 players online.
GoldenEye: Source is a free fps game released under Free (non-commercial fan project). It runs on Windows, needs about 2.6 GB of disk space, and requires no account, payment or trial. On a computer, the fastest route is the PlayBound Launcher. On a phone or tablet, use the official store or site instead.
One-click install
PlayBound fetches the official release — no third-party mirrors.
Install Steam if you don't already have it — a free account is enough, and nothing here needs to be purchased.
Windows
Download the full installer from geshl2.com and run it. It writes GoldenEye: Source into Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\gesource and installs the free Source SDK Base 2007 dependency for you.
Windows
Restart Steam completely. GoldenEye: Source only appears in your library — and in PlayBound's launcher — after Steam has been relaunched.
Linux
There's no native Linux build. It runs unofficially through Proton 10.0 on Source SDK Base 2007; extract the archive into steamapps/sourcemods/gesource by hand. Voice chat and the server message of the day don't work under Proton.
Minimum
Windows 10/11 · dual-core CPU · DirectX 9 graphics · 8 GB RAM · 10 GB free space · Steam plus the free Source SDK Base 2007
Recommended
Windows 11 · Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 · any dedicated GPU · 16 GB RAM · 10 GB free space · wired connection for 16-player servers
Yes. It's a non-commercial fan project — nothing is sold, nothing needs a license, and you don't need to own the original GoldenEye 007 cartridge or any other game. Steam and the free Source SDK Base 2007 are the only requirements.
No. Every level, weapon and model was redrawn from scratch by the mod team rather than extracted from the N64 game, and it runs on the free Source SDK Base 2007, not on Half-Life 2 itself.
Up to 16 on a public dedicated server. The team's own numbers put at least 20 public servers online at any given time, with community lobbies filling up most evenings.
Not that the team documents. It's a mouse-and-keyboard Source engine shooter — this isn't the couch co-op experience GoldenEye had on N64.
Yes, but the developers call bot support an experimental feature rather than a finished one — a known engine bug can let bots fill a server and block real players from joining even after they're removed, so they don't recommend it for populated servers.
Only unofficially on Linux, through Proton 10.0 — voice chat and the server message of the day don't work there. There's no macOS build at all; this is a Windows-first Source engine mod.
