Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus

Ground Control 2 takes the first game's focus on battlefield decisions and makes it faster, more readable, and more social. Armies arrive through dropships, reinforcement points come from holding territory, and every map keeps pushing players toward contact. There is no base economy to memorize before the interesting part begins.

The campaign follows the Northern Star Alliance and the Virons through a large science-fiction war, and it can be played cooperatively with two additional friends. Competitive maps support up to eight players with drop-in hosting, AI slots, teams, and several victory conditions. The original Massgate and GameSpy services are gone, but the game still contains its LAN mode.

GC2 Essentials is the reason this PlayBound Edition is more than an archival listing. The current community pack fixes launch failures triggered by wireless devices, improves zoom behavior, corrects widescreen presentation, and redirects the multiplayer backend to OpenSpy. PlayBound copies the legal GOG installation before applying the pack, so the original folder stays untouched. Public community games work through OpenSpy; private parties can use PlayBound Connect and the LAN menu without port forwarding.

This remains a 2004 Windows game. Controller support is not the point, modern compatibility still needs testing, and OpenSpy is a community service rather than an official guarantee. For mouse-and-keyboard strategy groups, though, the sequel has aged remarkably well.
