HoloCure is one of our favorite examples of a free game that has absolutely no business being this good. It looks like a silly fan-made Vampire Survivors-style game built around VTubers, and then you realize there's an absurd amount of content, polish, progression, secrets, and build experimentation underneath it. It's generous, weird, and genuinely addictive.
Genuinely free
No trial, no paywalled campaign, no pay-to-win, no cosmetic treadmill. Free means free, forever.
Finished enough to enjoy
Playable and satisfying start to finish today — not a promising alpha you should check back on.
Actively maintained
A release or meaningful commit within the last twelve months. Someone is still looking after it.
Stands on its own merits
Good enough that we would recommend it even if it cost money. Free is not the reason it is here.
High quality only
We cut through free-game noise and only platform games that are actually good. Volume is not a goal.

HoloCure - Save the Fans! is a free, fan-made roguelite developed by Kay Yu and inspired by the talents and universe of Hololive. At first glance, the concept sounds almost impossibly niche: choose a Hololive character, fight enormous waves of enemies, collect experience, build increasingly ridiculous weapon combinations, and try to survive long enough to defeat increasingly powerful bosses.
In practice, it is an exceptionally polished take on the survivor-like formula.
Each playable character has their own unique starting weapon, special ability, stats, and upgrade possibilities. As enemies flood the screen, defeated opponents drop experience that allows you to level up and choose new weapons or upgrades. Weapons can be combined and evolved into more powerful forms, while character-specific abilities encourage different approaches to building your run.
The fun comes from discovering how all of these systems interact. One run might focus on overwhelming the screen with projectiles, while another turns your character into a close-range damage machine or builds around defensive effects and healing. Once you understand the game's systems, you start experimenting with combinations simply because you want to see how ridiculous they can become.
And HoloCure is far more than a basic survivor-like.
Outside of the main stages is an extensive progression system that gives you reasons to keep playing after a run ends. You can unlock characters, weapons, upgrades, costumes, achievements, and other content while gradually building up your account. There are also fishing, farming, cooking, an arcade, a management-style mode, and other side activities that make the game feel surprisingly substantial.
The presentation is another major strength. HoloCure uses charming pixel art and animations that are packed with references to Hololive personalities, memes, jokes, and fan culture. The game constantly rewards players who recognize those references, but you don't need to be deeply familiar with Hololive to understand the basic gameplay.
Most importantly, it is completely free. There is no premium currency, no gameplay locked behind a payment, and no requirement to spend money to access the core experience. This is a fan project made with an almost absurd level of care.
That makes HoloCure particularly interesting to us. It's a reminder that some of the best free games aren't trying to compete with AAA releases. Sometimes they're passion projects built by people who simply love a particular community, genre, or idea enough to make something far bigger than anyone expected.
We picked HoloCure because it's the kind of discovery that makes building PlayBound fun. We went in expecting a goofy Hololive-themed survivor game and found a legitimately excellent roguelite with an enormous amount of content. The fan-service is fun, but it's the surprisingly deep systems and ridiculous amount of polish that kept us playing. It's exactly the sort of free game you can recommend to someone with almost no downside: download it, give it a shot, and suddenly you've lost three hours.
