How to install Hypersomnia for free

Hypersomnia is a free arcade game released under Free to play. It runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, needs about 120 MB of disk space, and requires no account, payment or trial. On a computer, the fastest route is the PlayBound Launcher. On a phone or tablet, use the official store or site instead.

Choose how to install

Install with PlayBound or download from the official source without the launcher.

Installation steps

  1. 1

    Windows

Install through PlayBound. The recipe points at the official always-latest Windows build, and the client patches itself on launch.

  2. 2

    Linux

The Linux build is an AppImage. Mark it executable and run it; add --appimage-extract-and-run if you do not have FUSE.

  3. 3

    macOS

Install the official DMG build and drag it to Applications.

  4. 4

Set a nickname in Settings, then open Browse servers and pick a regional ranked or casual instance.

  5. 5

Play the Duel Practice arena solo once before joining a live round — the recoil pattern and the buy menu decide most early fights.

First Play Guide

Recommended first-time setup and configuration steps when launching Hypersomnia.

  1. 1

Install through PlayBound and launch. The client checks for an update on every start, so the first run may patch itself before the menu appears.

  2. 2

Set a nickname in Settings, then use Browse servers — official ranked and casual instances are listed per region.

  3. 3

Try the Duel Practice arena solo first. Recoil and the buy menu are the two things that decide early rounds.

Multiplayer Gaming Steps

How to join and navigate multiplayer lobbies and servers in Hypersomnia.

  1. 1

Create a PlayBound Party and pick Connect — PlayBound starts a private Hypersomnia dedicated server on its VPS and joins everyone to it.

  2. 2

To host it yourself instead, choose self-hosted in the party and let the launcher map UDP 8412.

  3. 3

Custom maps download automatically on connect, so a party can play an arena nobody else has installed.

Install questions

Is Hypersomnia free?

Completely. It is AGPL-3.0 open source, free on its own site and free on Steam, with no purchases, battle pass or cosmetics store. The official regional servers are run by the project.

Does Hypersomnia support controllers?

No. We searched the source and the default configuration for joystick, gamepad, XInput and DirectInput and found nothing, so it is mouse and keyboard only. We have not tagged it for Controller Support, which also means PlayBound will not offer you phone-as-controller for it.

How many players fit in a match?

Sixteen by default — that is the slots value in the game's own default configuration — and a server operator can change it. Official instances run ranked and casual variants, and spectator slots are separate from playing slots.

Can PlayBound host a private Hypersomnia server for my party?

Yes. Hypersomnia ships a headless dedicated server, so PlayBound starts a private instance on its VPS when your party hits Connect and joins everyone to it. You can also self-host from your own machine, which the launcher will offer if your connection can accept inbound UDP on 8412.

What makes the netcode unusual?

The server sends only player inputs rather than world state, and every client simulates the rest deterministically. Bandwidth therefore scales with player count, not object count — roughly 5 KB/s for two players at a 60 Hz tick, in a map with hundreds of dynamic objects. When someone joins, all clients rebuild their physics state so every simulation stays identical.

Do I need to download custom maps before joining a server?

No. Connecting to a server running a community arena downloads the map and its resources automatically, over HTTPS from the map catalogue or directly from the server over UDP if the catalogue is unreachable.

Can I play it in a browser?

Yes. There is an official web client, and it interoperates with native clients — you can host a server in a browser tab and have desktop players connect to it. Linking a Discord account to Steam shares your ranked rating between the two.

Does Hypersomnia have multiplayer?

Yes. Hypersomnia supports up to 16 players. You can have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher, with the dedicated server started for you if you choose one. It also supports cross-play, LAN play, a ranked ladder, and spectating. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
