Question 1

Is OpenArena really free?

Accepted Answer

Completely. The engine is GPL and every asset was created by the community to be freely licensed, so there is nothing to buy, no account to make and no store. You do not need to own Quake III or any other game.

Question 2

Do I need Quake III Arena to play it?

Accepted Answer

No. OpenArena reuses id Software's open-sourced engine but ships its own maps, weapons, models and sounds. It is a complete standalone game.

Question 3

Is anyone still playing in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though modestly. We counted 70 listed servers with 221 players across them when this entry was last checked, concentrated in Europe and North America. Expect populated deathmatch and CTF in the evenings rather than instant matchmaking.

Question 4

Why is the last release from 2012?

Accepted Answer

Development on the stable branch stopped after 0.8.8. The game was finished by then, and community work since has gone into maps and the experimental OpenArena eXpanded branch rather than new official releases.

Question 5

Will it run on my old laptop?

Accepted Answer

Almost certainly. The engine dates from 1999, so integrated graphics will hold well over a hundred frames per second. The only real requirement is about 700 MB of disk space.

Question 6

Can I play offline or on a LAN?

Accepted Answer

Yes to both. Bots fill any arena for offline practice, and LAN play needs no internet connection and no accounts, which makes it a reliable choice for a room full of machines.

Question 7

Is this related to The Elder Scrolls: Arena?

Accepted Answer

No, despite both being in this catalog. That is a 1994 Bethesda RPG; this is a multiplayer arena shooter. They share nothing but the word.

Question 8

Does OpenArena have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenArena supports up to 16 players. You can join a public community server from the PlayBound server browser, have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group, and host a game on your own PC. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher, with the dedicated server started for you if you choose one. It also supports LAN play. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
