Installation & Setup

Install Method — PlayBound installer

Step-by-Step Instructions

    Own and install Soldier of Fortune first. The base folder must contain SoF.exe and base/pak0.pak; openMERC includes no original game assets.

    windows

    Choose Install in PlayBound. It finds or asks for your Soldier of Fortune folder, copies the game into a separate openMERC edition folder, adds the Windows engine release, and launches openMerc.exe.

    linux

    Copy a legally installed Soldier of Fortune folder from Windows to a case-sensitive Linux filesystem, then choose Install and locate that folder. PlayBound adds the experimental x86_64 engine build; it requires glibc 2.38+.

Requires your own installed Soldier of Fortune data. PlayBound locates a legal copy, copies it into this edition's separate folder, then adds the matching openMERC release. The GOG copy is untested upstream; the Linux build is experimental.

Requires Soldier of Fortune data, not supplied by openMERC. Retail 1.07f was tested upstream; GOG compatibility is untested. The Windows ZIP is 4.54 MB and the Linux archive is 5.29 MB; neither includes the owned game. Linux display, sound, Wayland and fullscreen have not been verified on real hardware by the developer. macOS has no release build.
