That One Thing
Deploying Gungan energy shields and marching a phalanx of Imperial Mech AT-AT walkers across volcanic planets to the original John Williams score.
Age of Empires II reimagined with heavy turbolasers, energy shield generators, and stomping AT-AT walkers. Familiar economy, thrilling sci-fi warfare.
Worth the cost
Free, or regularly available for $15 or less. Good developers deserve to be paid, and optional cosmetics, expansions, and premium extras are welcome. But we won't list games that sell competitive advantages, disguise a trial as free, or charge again to finish the core experience.
Ready to play
Playable and satisfying today. It can be unfinished; it cannot be unfun. We love supporting indie developers, but prototypes, broken releases, and promises of a future game do not make the cut.
Tested by PlayBound
We install it, launch it, and play it ourselves. We've spent hours building definitive editions and making multiplayer work, because a store-page claim is not the same as a game we can confidently put in front of you.
That One Thing
Every game needs that one thing we'd excitedly tell our friends about. It might be the mechanics, story, art, soundtrack, controls, community, or the way it brings people together. If it doesn't have one, it doesn't make the catalog.

Released in late 2001 by LucasArts and Ensemble Studios, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is the golden-era answer to a question millions of strategy players asked: what if Age of Empires II had blasters, repulsorlifts, and planetary orbital strikes? Built directly on Ensemble's celebrated Genie Engine, Battlegrounds didn't just borrow mechanics from AoE2 — it adopted the entire tactical framework of villagers, town centers, and upgrade ages, transforming food, wood, gold, and stone into carbon, ore, nova crystals, and food supplies.
The genius of Galactic Battlegrounds lies in how thoroughly it remaps Star Wars doctrine onto RTS fundamentals. Rather than generic mirrors, each faction has a defined tactical character. The Galactic Empire relies on overwhelming heavy mechanized armor and walkers; the Rebel Alliance leverages mobile hit-and-run speed and starfighter air superiority; the Trade Federation floods choke points with cheap, expendable battle droids; while the Gungans command biological technology with mobile energy shield generators that can protect whole siege lines.
The included Clone Campaigns expansion further escalates the conflict, adding the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems along with atmospheric air cruisers, Geonosian warriors, and decimation weapons. Combat spans land, sea, and airspace, giving siege warfare a multi-tier verticality that vanilla medieval RTS never possessed.
Today, Galactic Battlegrounds Saga stands as one of the most mechanically satisfying Star Wars strategy games ever published. For strategy purists who love classic base building, tech trees, and macro management, its rhythmic resource flow and legendary sound design make it an unforgettable staple of PC strategy history.
Too many licensed games treat beloved universes as mere cosmetic skins. Galactic Battlegrounds took the undisputed pinnacle of 2D real-time strategy engines and rebuilt it into a legitimate, deeply strategic Star Wars conflict. We curated it because its campaign depth, faction variety, and thriving community expansion scene make it just as exhilarating to command today as it was in 2001.
