Xonotic vs Unvanquished

Short answer

Xonotic and Unvanquished are both free, open-source first-person shooters but serve different needs. Xonotic is a fast classic arena shooter in the Quake III tradition with strong bot support and good solo drop-in play. Unvanquished is an asymmetric FPS/RTS hybrid where humans build bases and aliens evolve — more distinctive, but it requires a coordinated team and populated servers.

Two free open-source shooters that share almost nothing beyond a first-person camera. One is a pure arena shooter; the other is an FPS/RTS hybrid with no real commercial equivalent.

Against the PlayBound Bar

Xonotic has no interest in slowing down for you. It belongs to that wonderfully aggressive school of arena shooters where movement is a skill, weapon choice matters, and standing still is basically volunteering to die. We picked it because firing up Xonotic feels like stepping into a version of multiplayer FPS design that modern shooters largely abandoned.

Unvanquished is one of those games we picked because it feels like somebody refused to let the classic PC FPS formula die. It takes the asymmetrical human-vs-alien warfare of games like Natural Selection and pushes it into a modern, open-source package with base building, evolving armies, and genuinely different ways to play.
