The superhero MMO that was switched off in 2012, running again — free, and with seven more years of content than it died with.
That One Thing
It's now officially licensed by NCSoft, and the volunteer team has shipped roughly seven years of new content since the 2012 shutdown.
City of Heroes launched in 2004 and became one of the defining superhero MMOs on the strength of one idea: the costume creator mattered as much as the combat. Homecoming is the community server that kept that idea alive after NCSoft shut the original game down in 2012 — first as an unofficial fan revival built from leaked server code, and since January 2024, as an officially NCSoft-licensed operation with a legitimate legal footing, no subscription, and no cash shop.
The pitch is the same one that worked twenty years ago: pick Paragon City (heroes) or the Rogue Isles (villains), build a character from a genuinely deep costume editor and a combination of primary and secondary power sets — dozens of them, mixable in ways that produce real build diversity rather than a handful of optimal templates — and then go do whatever an MMO lets a superhero do. Missions, story arcs, open-world zone events, and a team system that's fast to form and doesn't punish you for playing casually. Power stays visually separate from gear here in a way most MMOs never bothered with: your look is your choice, not a stat tradeoff.
What Homecoming adds on top of the 2012 shutdown point is not small — the team has shipped roughly seven years' worth of new content since then: new power sets, incarnate-tier endgame content, quality-of-life systems the original never had, and ongoing balance work, all built and maintained by volunteers. It genuinely feels current rather than preserved in amber.
The honest catch is setup friction: you need a separate forum account at Homecoming's own site before you can log in, the launcher patches a large client after the initial download, and the visual and animation fidelity is unmistakably 2004 — this won't look like a modern MMO. But once you're in, the social pace and the sheer freedom of the character-building system are still doing something almost nothing else on the market does. We picked it because 'the MMO that got switched off and came back for free, run by the people who loved it most' is exactly the kind of story PlayBound exists to put in front of players who never got the memo.
The practical picture is simple. The launcher is the only thing you install by hand; it downloads and patches the client, which grows well beyond the small installer, and the wiki's published requirements are modest by modern standards: a low-end CPU, integrated graphics and 4 GB of RAM are enough, with an optional Ultra Mode for newer GPUs. The input expectation is a keyboard and mouse, so we have not tagged native controller support. It is Windows-first, with the community's LaunchCat launcher serving macOS as an unofficial route, and a free forum account plus a separate game account are required before your first login. None of that changes the reason to try it: a hero you designed yourself, in a city that runs on volunteer effort and official permission.
We picked City of Heroes: Homecoming because it's a genuine, officially-licensed revival of a game that was switched off in 2012 — run by volunteers, free with no cash shop, and still actively growing seven years past where it died. That's preservation working exactly as it should.

Yes. City of Heroes: Homecoming supports up to 8 players. Its multiplayer runs through the game's own online service or menus, so PlayBound Connect parties and PlayBound dedicated servers are not available for it. It also supports co-op play. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
Yes. Homecoming supports XInput gamepads and other controllers through Raw Input. Open Options > Controls > Game Controller, choose your device, and configure power bindings. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for chat and menus. PlayBound preserves your bindings rather than installing an untested layout. Source: https://wiki.homecomingservers.com/wiki/Issue_26_Page_2
The installer is small, but the launcher then downloads the full client. Expect well over 10 GB on disk; a third-party spec sheet puts it near 15 GB, and we recommend 15–20 GB free.
