That One Thing
Accomplishing anything in this game makes you feel like you just graduated from college
HorizonXI is a volunteer-run Final Fantasy XI server that has been live since 17 December 2022, built on the AirSkyBoat codebase. Its premise is that Square Enix never raised the level cap above 75: it launched at Chains of Promathia content, has patched through Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and rebalances post-75 expansions downward into level-75 content instead of replacing it.
Era-accurate where it matters — movement speed 40, 1.0 experience and crafting rates, equipment scaling disabled, Square Enix's own Treasure Hunter and drop-rate charts, a player-stocked auction house, no Trusts and no home-point warps. Jobs get light adjustments under a stated rule that every change must push a job toward its own identity, so all fifteen Chains of Promathia jobs are viable.
Completely free. The launcher installs the game client itself, so nothing needs buying. Single-box: one account per IP address and three characters, with IP exceptions available from the Discord for shared households.
HorizonXI is an unaffiliated community project. All Final Fantasy XI content and images remain Square Enix's.

No. The HorizonXI launcher downloads a complete game client itself. No retail purchase, no Square Enix account and no monthly subscription.
Everything up to and including Treasures of Aht Urhgan, at a permanent level 75 cap, matching a retail patch date of 17 April 2006. Later expansions are planned but will be rebalanced into level-75 content rather than raising the cap.
Not by default — one account per IP address and three characters. Shared households and LAN parties request an IP exception in the HorizonXI Discord, which needs filing in advance.
HorizonXI publishes explicit approved and prohibited lists on its add-ons page, and anything not on the allowed list is not permitted. The launcher can enable approved ones for you. Submit a Discord ticket to have a new one reviewed.

The MMO that still expects you to make friends before you make progress.
