Metal Slug traded arcade credits for a live-service map—and somehow kept the explosions loud enough to hear over the menus.
That One Thing
The weapon announcer is still yelling while the screen fills with tanks, fireballs, rescued prisoners, and the sort of cheerful military nonsense only Metal Slug can get away with.
Metal Slug: Awakening stuffs the arcade classic into a live-service backpack full of upgrades and currencies, but the second a heavy machine gun starts chewing through tanks, the old magic comes roaring back.
Worth the cost
Free, or regularly available for $15 or less. Good developers deserve to be paid, and optional cosmetics, expansions, and premium extras are welcome. But we won't list games that sell competitive advantages, disguise a trial as free, or charge again to finish the core experience.
Ready to play
Playable and satisfying today. It can be unfinished; it cannot be unfun. We love supporting indie developers, but prototypes, broken releases, and promises of a future game do not make the cut.
Tested by PlayBound
We install it, launch it, and play it ourselves. We've spent hours building definitive editions and making multiplayer work, because a store-page claim is not the same as a game we can confidently put in front of you.
That One Thing
Every game needs that one thing we'd excitedly tell our friends about. It might be the mechanics, story, art, soundtrack, controls, community, or the way it brings people together. If it doesn't have one, it doesn't make the catalog.

Metal Slug has never been subtle. A prisoner hands you a heavy machine gun, a voice bellows its name like the weapon just entered a wrestling ring, and thirty seconds later the screen is full of smoke, medals, cartoon soldiers, and a tank that is having a catastrophically bad afternoon. Awakening understands that part perfectly. It is fast, noisy, generous with explosions, and still built around the tiny pleasure of turning one good pickup into an unreasonable amount of destruction.
What changed is everything wrapped around the shooting. This is not Metal Slug 8 and it is not a museum-perfect remake of the Neo Geo games. Awakening takes the familiar left-to-right missions and bolts them onto an online action RPG: characters have roles, weapons have upgrade paths, modes rotate, rewards pile up, and the map keeps finding new icons to wave at you. Sometimes that structure gives you a satisfying reason to try another hero or chase a stronger build. Sometimes it feels like the arcade cabinet has been surrounded by six people holding clipboards.
The actual stages are why we keep paying attention. Marco, Eri, Tarma and Fio still sprint through compact battlefields, rescue prisoners, steal enemy machinery, and turn ridiculous guns on armies that react with equally ridiculous animation. The shift from pixel art to bright 3D models loses some of the hand-drawn sorcery of the originals, but it keeps their rubber-faced slapstick. Soldiers panic. Machines wobble before they explode. Bosses occupy enough of the screen to make your character look like a typo.
Awakening also makes more sense with friends than its mobile-game structure first suggests. Cooperative activities give a group something to work toward beyond comparing high scores, while competitive modes provide a place for upgraded builds to collide. PlayBound does not host those servers—the publisher does—so this is online multiplayer, not one of our self-hosted party games. Regional service matters too: HAOPLAY runs the global release, while VNGGames operates Southeast Asia. Use the client meant for your region instead of discovering the account split after a large download.
The good news for PC players is refreshingly simple: Steam is optional. HAOPLAY publishes a standalone Windows loader, and PlayBound points directly to it. The loader fetches the full game and handles its updates. We are keeping this entry in Testing until we finish our own installation and controller pass, because an official download button is not the same thing as firsthand verification.
Come for Metal Slug’s perfect little loop—move, jump, rescue, grab gun, erase half the screen—and stay if a long-term progression game sounds better than another one-credit run. If currencies, upgrade menus, and scheduled rewards make you reach for the power switch, the original arcade campaigns are still the cleaner machine. Awakening is messier, busier, and much more modern. It is also capable of making a heavy machine gun feel like excellent news.
We picked Metal Slug: Awakening because the official standalone PC client is easy to miss, and because underneath the live-service scaffolding is still one of gaming’s most joyful verbs: unload a ridiculous weapon until everything on screen falls apart. We also like that it gives friends an ongoing Metal Slug game instead of another solitary nostalgia lap. The catch matters—the currencies and upgrade menus are not decoration, and this is not the pure arcade sequel some fans want. But PlayBound exists for discoveries with a real reason to click Install, and “Metal Slug on PC without Steam, with co-op and an announcer screaming weapon names” is a very good reason.

No. This entry now covers the officially licensed Metal Slug: Awakening published through HAOPLAY and regional partners.
Yes. It is an online game with cooperative and competitive activities, although PlayBound does not host its publisher-operated servers.
The game is designed for action controls, but PlayBound is keeping this entry in Testing until we verify the standalone PC client’s controller behavior ourselves.
