Every conveyor belt is part of the defense plan.
That One Thing
The factory is the fortress: every belt that feeds production also decides whether the next enemy wave breaks your line.
Mindustry is what happens when a tower defense game decides it wants to be a factory simulator and then accidentally becomes an RTS. We picked it because it keeps adding another layer—mining, logistics, production, power, defenses, research—until you're no longer defending a base so much as operating an increasingly ridiculous industrial machine.
Worth the cost
Free, or regularly available for $15 or less. Good developers deserve to be paid, and optional cosmetics, expansions, and premium extras are welcome. But we won't list games that sell competitive advantages, disguise a trial as free, or charge again to finish the core experience.
Ready to play
Playable and satisfying today. It can be unfinished; it cannot be unfun. We love supporting indie developers, but prototypes, broken releases, and promises of a future game do not make the cut.
Tested by PlayBound
We install it, launch it, and play it ourselves. We've spent hours building definitive editions and making multiplayer work, because a store-page claim is not the same as a game we can confidently put in front of you.
That One Thing
Every game needs that one thing we'd excitedly tell our friends about. It might be the mechanics, story, art, soundtrack, controls, community, or the way it brings people together. If it doesn't have one, it doesn't make the catalog.

Mindustry is a free, open-source sandbox strategy game that combines tower defense, factory automation, resource management, and real-time strategy into one unusually cohesive package. Developed by Anuke, it asks you to build and defend increasingly complex industrial operations while simultaneously dealing with enemy forces determined to destroy everything you've constructed.
The basic gameplay loop begins simply. You land on a planet, collect resources, establish a small base, and build defenses to protect it from waves of hostile units. But unlike a conventional tower defense game, your defenses aren't the only thing you need to worry about. You have to manufacture the materials required to build them in the first place.
That means constructing mines, conveyors, drills, processors, generators, power networks, factories, storage systems, and distribution infrastructure. Raw materials need to move through your production chain in the correct quantities, and a bottleneck in one part of the factory can eventually bring the entire operation to a halt.
Eventually, you're building genuinely elaborate supply chains. Copper and lead become ammunition. Coal can become power or fuel. Sand and other resources feed into increasingly sophisticated production processes. Fluids need to be transported through pipes. Advanced materials require multiple intermediate steps. By the later stages, your base can resemble a miniature industrial complex.
Then the enemies arrive.
Enemy waves force you to balance your obsession with production against the immediate need to survive. You need walls, turrets, ammunition, power, repair systems, and increasingly advanced defensive technology. At the same time, the game provides your own offensive capabilities, allowing you to construct units and launch attacks against enemy bases.
That transition from "build a factory" to "build a factory that builds an army that destroys another factory" is where Mindustry becomes particularly compelling.
The campaign provides a structured progression through different planets and environments, introducing new resources, technologies, enemies, and strategic challenges. Sandbox and custom-map modes provide much more freedom, while multiplayer allows players to cooperate or compete.
The game also has an extensive modding ecosystem. Because Mindustry is open source, players and developers can create new content and systems rather than being limited to whatever the original developer decides to add.
Despite its complexity, Mindustry has an unusually clean core loop. Every machine exists for a reason. Every conveyor has a purpose. Every production problem can usually be traced back to a decision you made somewhere else.
We picked Mindustry because we didn't expect a tower defense game to turn into an industrial engineering problem. The moment you realize your turret isn't firing because three production lines upstream aren't supplying enough ammunition, the game has you. We love that every part of the base is connected—and fixing one problem inevitably seems to create another.

The desktop version on Steam, itch.io and the official site is entirely free and open-source under GPL-3.0, with no purchases or advertising. The iOS and Android store listings are paid, which is the only place money changes hands.
The core loop is very similar — conveyor logistics, resource chains and throughput optimisation. The differences are that Mindustry is top-down 2D, uses bounded maps rather than one endless world, and makes combat central rather than incidental. Sessions are much shorter as a result.
Yes, both co-op and competitive PvP, on free public servers or your own. Multiplayer costs nothing and requires no account.
Around 250 MB, which makes it one of the smaller games in the catalog. It runs comfortably on old laptops and low-end hardware.
It is one of the better entry points. Bounded maps and a guided campaign introduce concepts gradually, and a failed sector costs you an evening rather than a month of progress.
Yes. There is a built-in mod browser with a large community library covering maps, schematics, new content and full overhauls, installable without leaving the game.
