Question 1

Is OpenRA free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely. OpenRA is open-source under GPL-3.0 with no purchase, subscription, in-game currency or advertising. The original game assets it uses were released as freeware by Electronic Arts, so the whole package is legal and free.

Question 2

Is OpenRA legal?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenRA is a clean-room reimplementation of the game engine, and the Command & Conquer and Red Alert assets it downloads were officially released as freeware by Electronic Arts. Nothing is pirated.

Question 3

Which OpenRA mod should I start with?

Accepted Answer

Red Alert. It has the largest player base, the most active ladder and the most familiar faction design. Tiberian Dawn is the closer recreation of the 1995 original if that is what you are after.

Question 4

Does OpenRA have single-player campaigns?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Each mod includes the original campaign missions alongside skirmish mode against AI opponents of varying difficulty. You never need to play online.

Question 5

Is OpenRA still active in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Development continues, balance patches ship regularly, and the multiplayer ladder has an ongoing population. Live server and player counts are shown on the OpenRA servers page.

Question 6

Can I play OpenRA on Steam Deck?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenRA runs on the Steam Deck, though it is a mouse-driven RTS so a trackpad or external mouse gives a much better experience than the sticks.

Question 7

How is OpenRA different from the C&C Remastered Collection?

Accepted Answer

The Remastered Collection is a paid product that upgrades the original graphics while keeping the original engine behaviour. OpenRA is free and rewrites the engine, modernising unit control, pathfinding and multiplayer — a different design philosophy rather than a cheaper version of the same thing.

Question 8

Does OpenRA have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenRA supports up to 8 players. You can join a public community server from the PlayBound server browser, have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group, and host a game on your own PC. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher, with the dedicated server started for you if you choose one. It also supports LAN play and a ranked ladder. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
