A globe-trotting mercenary shooter where the shotgun makes every corridor feel dangerously short.

That One Thing
A shot to an enemy's gun hand can disarm them. The game gives your aim a job beyond making the health bar disappear.
Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition is Raven Software's 2001 version of its globe-trotting mercenary shooter. You play John Mullins, chasing stolen nuclear weapons through a campaign that has no interest in sitting still. One mission is a street fight, the next is a military installation, and nearly every room seems to have someone already aiming at the door. It is an early-2000s action game in full: loud, blunt, and much faster than its tactical premise suggests.
The gunplay is the reason to return. Enemies use hitscan weapons, so standing in the open is a poor long-term plan. You move between cover, peek out long enough to drop a threat, then push before the next group settles in. Shotguns, rifles, explosives, and a knife all have clear jobs. The famous GHOUL damage system tracks hits by body location. Its most obvious effect is graphic violence, but the more interesting effect is mechanical: a well-placed shot can interrupt or disarm an opponent. Turning a desperate burst of fire into a deliberate shot is one of the game's better little victories.
The campaign crosses five continents over 26 levels. Its stolen-warheads plot is straight-faced pulp, and the dialogue has all the subtlety you would expect from a mercenary thriller of its era. That confidence is part of the appeal. Raven builds settings that keep changing the shape of the fight, rather than stretching one warehouse across the whole game. The Platinum edition also adds multiplayer maps and modes to the original package, giving a group a reason to keep the install after the campaign is over.
Multiplayer needs a little historical context. GOG's current release supports LAN and direct connection, not the original online matchmaking service. Players need compatible copies and an address or shared network. PlayBound parties can bring the group together and guide everyone to the same host. A dedicated SoFplus server is technically possible, but hosting one requires licensed 1.07f game files and a separately verified server install. Until that provisioning is complete, parties should use the game's own LAN or direct-IP flow.
This is a keyboard-and-mouse PC game. It does not ship with modern native gamepad support. PlayBound Controls can translate a pad into movement, aiming, and mouse clicks, but a profile should be tested in the actual game before we call it a polished controller experience. Likewise, GOG sells a DRM-free offline installer; owning the game does not give PlayBound permission to redistribute it. Install your GOG copy, then let the launcher detect the executable or point Locate to it.
We include Soldier of Fortune because it has more going for it than a reputation for gore. The rooms are compact, the pace is urgent, and its unusually specific hit reactions make an old shooter feel distinct. Bring a friend for a direct-IP match after the campaign, or play alone and see how long you can keep your head down when the next door opens.

Minimum Requirements
Windows 7/8/10; 1.8 GHz CPU; 512 MB RAM; Nvidia/AMD DirectX 9-compatible graphics; 1 GB free storage (GOG's current requirements).
Recommended Requirements
GOG recommends 1 GB RAM. It publishes no separate CPU, GPU, or storage recommendation; modern Windows 11 compatibility should be checked on the specific machine.
Published by the game's own developers.
No. This is the paid, DRM-free GOG release. Each player needs their own copy.
Yes, through LAN or direct IP. The GOG release does not restore the original matchmaking service; use an address or a PlayBound virtual LAN party.
The original PC manual allows up to 32 clients and recommends 16 for better network performance. A particular host may set a lower cap.
There is no native full gamepad support in the GOG PC release. A PlayBound keyboard-and-mouse mapping is in testing and should not be treated as verified until a live playtest.
The 1.07f engine supports dedicated servers, but a PlayBound VPS room requires licensed game data and a tested server install. It is not ready for public hosting yet.
GOG lists 1 GB of free storage. Its current offline installer is approximately 497 MB; leave room for the installed files and saves.
Yes. Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition supports up to 32 players. You can have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group and host a game on your own PC. It also supports LAN play.
