Is Space Station 14 free?

What is the difference between Space Station 14 and Space Station 13?

Space Station 13 is the original, built on the BYOND engine from the 1990s. Space Station 14 is a from-scratch reimplementation on a purpose-built engine with a modern interface, better performance and native Windows, macOS and Linux clients. The design is the same; the barrier to entry is much lower.

How long is a round?

Usually one to two hours. Rounds end when the shuttle leaves or the station becomes unsurvivable, and nothing carries over to the next one — there is no progression system.

Do I need to roleplay?

On most servers, yes, at least lightly. Staying in character is a rule rather than a suggestion, and servers vary in how strictly they enforce it. Each server publishes its rules in the launcher, and low-roleplay servers exist if that is not for you.

The systems are deep, but you do not need to know them all. Pick a simple job, read your department's wiki page, and ask in-character questions — helping new players is part of the culture. Expect your first couple of rounds to be confusing regardless.

Not meaningfully. The entire game is other people; an empty station has almost nothing to offer. You can host a local server to learn controls, but that is practice rather than play.

Yes. It is a 2D game with modest requirements and runs comfortably on a Steam Deck or an older laptop. The main constraint is that it is mouse-and-keyboard heavy, so a Deck benefits from a control layout or an external keyboard.
