An unmatched open-source social sandbox where complex atmospheric physics, hilarious station sabotage, and emergent player-driven workplace chaos make every round unforgettable.
Genuinely free
No trial, no paywalled campaign, no pay-to-win, no cosmetic treadmill. Free means free, forever.
Finished enough to enjoy
Playable and satisfying start to finish today — not a promising alpha you should check back on.
Actively maintained
A release or meaningful commit within the last twelve months. Someone is still looking after it.
Stands on its own merits
Good enough that we would recommend it even if it cost money. Free is not the reason it is here.
High quality only
We cut through free-game noise and only platform games that are actually good. Volume is not a goal.

A multiplayer game about paranoia and disaster, remaking the classic Space Station 13

Open-space persistent exploration and trading fork of SS14.
Space Station 13 has been the best game nobody can play for twenty years. It runs on BYOND, an engine from 1996, and its interface assumes you already know everything. Space Station 14 is the attempt to keep what made it extraordinary and throw away the part that kept people out.
A round begins with the crew arriving on a station. You are assigned a job: engineer, botanist, security officer, chef, janitor, clown, and you go and do it. The engineers actually start the reactor, and if they do it badly, the station loses power. The chef actually cooks, using food the botanist actually grew. The doctors treat injuries that have specific causes, on a body with individually damageable parts. Nothing is abstracted into a progress bar.
Meanwhile, somebody has been quietly told they are a traitor.
What makes it work is that the simulation is honest. Atmospherics tracks gas composition, temperature and pressure per tile, so a hull breach is a real physical event that spreads. Power is a network you can trace and sabotage. Because the systems are consistent rather than scripted, players invent things the developers never planned — and the resulting stories are the actual product. A round can be a quiet shift where the biggest crisis is a plumbing failure, or it can end with the station on fire and the surviving crew arguing over who to trust in the escape shuttle.
It is round-based, which matters more than it sounds. Nothing carries over. There is no account progression, no unlocks, no gear score — the newest player and the veteran start each round on equal footing, and status comes entirely from competence and reputation. That design is why it stays interesting after a hundred hours and why it has no monetization to speak of.
The honest warning: this is not a game you drop into for fifteen minutes. Rounds run one to two hours, jobs have real learning curves, and the community expects you to stay in character. Most servers have new-player-friendly rules and will tolerate a lot of fumbling, but pick a job like Cargo Technician or Botanist for your first few rounds rather than Head of Security.
We put a lot of preservation projects in this catalog, and most of them are careful recreations of something that already worked. Space Station 14 is doing something harder, taking a genuinely great design trapped in an unusable engine and rebuilding it so that ordinary people can reach it. It is also the clearest example we have of a game where the interesting part is other players rather than content, which is exactly the kind of thing that dies when nobody is running free servers.
