Design your own tanks. Then design better ones.
That One Thing
Designing tanks component by component makes every battlefield victory feel like proof that your strange little machine actually worked.
Warzone 2100 has a surprisingly good answer to the question: what if an RTS actually let you build the army you wanted? Its technology tree and vehicle designer give it a level of experimentation that makes every campaign feel a little different. It's old-school strategy with an unusually satisfying amount of tinkering. You could say it lets you be the Supreme Commander
Worth the cost
Free, or regularly available for $15 or less. Good developers deserve to be paid, and optional cosmetics, expansions, and premium extras are welcome. But we won't list games that sell competitive advantages, disguise a trial as free, or charge again to finish the core experience.
Ready to play
Playable and satisfying today. It can be unfinished; it cannot be unfun. We love supporting indie developers, but prototypes, broken releases, and promises of a future game do not make the cut.
Tested by PlayBound
We install it, launch it, and play it ourselves. We've spent hours building definitive editions and making multiplayer work, because a store-page claim is not the same as a game we can confidently put in front of you.
That One Thing
Every game needs that one thing we'd excitedly tell our friends about. It might be the mechanics, story, art, soundtrack, controls, community, or the way it brings people together. If it doesn't have one, it doesn't make the catalog.

Warzone 2100 is a free and open-source real-time strategy game originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 1999. Set in a post-apocalyptic future after a catastrophic nuclear war, it combines traditional base-building RTS mechanics with a remarkably flexible vehicle and technology system.
You play as part of the Project, a group attempting to rebuild civilization after the collapse of the old world. The campaign takes you across a devastated landscape as you establish bases, research technologies, manufacture weapons, and fight rival factions competing for control of the remaining resources.
The basic RTS formula is familiar: collect resources, construct infrastructure, research new technologies, produce units, and destroy enemy forces. What makes Warzone 2100 stand out is how much of your military hardware you actually get to design.
Rather than simply unlocking a fixed list of tanks, the game provides a vehicle design system. You can combine different chassis, propulsion systems, and weapon technologies to create units suited to different situations. A fast reconnaissance vehicle, heavily armored tank, long-range artillery platform, or specialized anti-air unit can all emerge from the same underlying system.
That design philosophy extends to the technology tree. Research isn't just a straightforward march toward increasingly powerful units. New technologies can unlock entirely different weapons and battlefield approaches, encouraging you to adapt your military based on what you're fighting.
The campaign also makes good use of this flexibility. Missions can involve attacking enemy positions, defending installations, escorting units, capturing territory, or establishing bases in hostile environments. Your army carries forward between missions, giving the campaign a sense of continuity rather than treating every map as an isolated skirmish.
Multiplayer and skirmish modes provide a more traditional RTS experience, while the open-source community has continued improving the game long after its commercial release. Modern versions support contemporary operating systems, widescreen displays, higher resolutions, improved graphics, and a variety of community enhancements.
There's also an unusually interesting preservation story here. Warzone 2100 was eventually released as open source, allowing the community to continue developing a game that might otherwise have disappeared alongside many other late-1990s PC strategy titles.
Today, it occupies an interesting middle ground: unmistakably a product of the classic RTS era, but mechanically distinctive enough that it doesn't feel like simply another Command & Conquer or StarCraft clone.
We picked Warzone 2100 because the vehicle designer hooked us immediately. There's something satisfying about deciding exactly what your army needs, building it yourself, and then finding out whether your theory survives contact with the enemy. It turns an otherwise familiar RTS into something much more personal—and that's the kind of mechanical twist we look for.

Yes, entirely. Warzone 2100 was a commercial game in 1999 whose source code and assets were later released. It is now open-source under GPL-2.0 with no purchases or advertising.
Yes. Volunteers have maintained and improved it continuously since it was open-sourced, and releases continue to ship.
Yes, a substantial one. Units and research carry between missions, so losses have lasting consequences — one of the more interesting campaign structures of its era.
The unit designer. Instead of a fixed roster you research bodies, propulsion and weapons separately and combine them into your own designs, backed by a research tree running to hundreds of technologies.
Yes, including dedicated servers, though the player population is modest compared with newer free strategy games. Live server counts are shown on the Warzone 2100 servers page.
