Question 1

Is Warzone 2100 free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, entirely. Warzone 2100 was a commercial game in 1999 whose source code and assets were later released. It is now open-source under GPL-2.0 with no purchases or advertising.

Question 2

Is Warzone 2100 still being updated?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Volunteers have maintained and improved it continuously since it was open-sourced, and releases continue to ship.

Question 3

Does Warzone 2100 have a single-player campaign?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a substantial one. Units and research carry between missions, so losses have lasting consequences — one of the more interesting campaign structures of its era.

Question 4

What makes Warzone 2100 different from other RTS games?

Accepted Answer

The unit designer. Instead of a fixed roster you research bodies, propulsion and weapons separately and combine them into your own designs, backed by a research tree running to hundreds of technologies.

Question 5

Does Warzone 2100 have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Warzone 2100 supports up to 8 players. You can join a public community server from the PlayBound server browser, have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group, and host a game on your own PC. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher, with the dedicated server started for you if you choose one. It also supports LAN play. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
