Question 1

Is Xonotic free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, entirely. Xonotic is open-source under GPL-2.0 with no purchases, battle passes, cosmetics or advertising of any kind.

Question 2

Is Xonotic like Quake?

Accepted Answer

Yes, directly. Xonotic descends from the Quake III Arena tradition via Nexuiz, with no loadouts, map-based weapon pickups and movement-centric play. Its movement is faster and somewhat more technical than Quake III's.

Question 3

Does Xonotic have bots?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and they are good enough for genuine practice. You can learn maps and weapon timings entirely offline, which makes the game viable regardless of server population.

Question 4

How many players does Xonotic have?

Accepted Answer

Public servers are consistently populated but numbers are modest compared with commercial shooters. Live server and player counts are shown on the Xonotic servers page.

Question 5

Will Xonotic run on an old computer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, very well. The engine is efficient and reaches high frame rates on hardware that struggles with modern shooters, which matters in a game this fast.

Question 6

Does Xonotic have multiplayer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Xonotic supports up to 32 players. You can join a public community server from the PlayBound server browser, have PlayBound start a dedicated server for your group, and host a game on your own PC. PlayBound Connect handles the setup: start a party with your friends, pick how you want to play, and everyone launches into the same game from the PlayBound launcher, with the dedicated server started for you if you choose one. It also supports LAN play and spectating. There is no subscription and no paid multiplayer tier.
