Old School RuneScape is almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn't played it without making it sound ridiculous. You click a tree for wood, spend hours fishing, obsess over tiny gear upgrades, and somehow end up with hundreds of hours invested in a character you started with absolutely nothing. We picked it because few games have turned such simple systems into such a durable world.
Genuinely free
No trial, no paywalled campaign, no pay-to-win, no cosmetic treadmill. Free means free, forever.
Finished enough to enjoy
Playable and satisfying start to finish today — not a promising alpha you should check back on.
Actively maintained
A release or meaningful commit within the last twelve months. Someone is still looking after it.
Stands on its own merits
Good enough that we would recommend it even if it cost money. Free is not the reason it is here.
High quality only
We cut through free-game noise and only platform games that are actually good. Volume is not a goal.

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a free-to-play MMORPG built around the 2007 version of RuneScape, resurrected by Jagex after players voted overwhelmingly to bring the classic game back. What began as a snapshot of an older MMORPG has evolved into its own continuously updated game, with new quests, bosses, areas, skills, activities, and quality-of-life improvements being added while deliberately preserving the fundamental feel of the original. (oldschool.runescape.com)
At first glance, OSRS can look almost comically simple. The graphics are deliberately low-poly, the combat is relatively straightforward, and many activities involve clicking something and waiting for your character to do it. But that simplicity hides one of the deepest progression systems in the MMORPG genre.
There are 24 skills, covering everything from combat and magic to fishing, woodcutting, mining, crafting, farming, thieving, runecrafting, and construction. Almost everything you do contributes toward developing your character or generating resources that can be sold, traded, crafted, or used elsewhere.
The important part is that there isn't one prescribed way to play.
You can spend an afternoon fishing and cooking food, train combat to fight increasingly dangerous monsters, become a merchant on the Grand Exchange, work toward a difficult quest requirement, build your own house, hunt for rare drops, or simply wander around completing whatever catches your attention.
Quests are particularly important to the game's identity. Rather than being disposable errands designed to send you between quest markers, OSRS quests often involve puzzles, unusual characters, absurd humor, exploration, and multi-stage stories. Completing them can unlock entirely new areas, equipment, abilities, and gameplay systems.
Combat eventually becomes extremely deep despite its simple foundation. Players learn attack styles, gear combinations, positioning, boss mechanics, prayer management, inventory setups, and increasingly complicated strategies. High-level PvE encounters can demand extraordinary precision, while PvP has developed its own enormous skill ceiling.
The economy is another fundamental part of the experience. Almost everything has some relationship to the player-driven economy, whether you're gathering resources, crafting valuable items, flipping items on the Grand Exchange, or hunting rare drops.
Perhaps the strangest part is how much of the game's progression is self-directed. OSRS doesn't constantly tell you what you should be doing. Instead, players establish their own goals. One person might spend months working toward a maxed account while another is obsessed with a particular boss, quest cape, pet, achievement, or obscure collection.
That philosophy has allowed OSRS to survive where countless other MMORPGs disappeared. Jagex continues to develop the game, but major updates are heavily influenced by player polling, giving the community an unusually direct role in determining its future.
And while much of the game is available for free, an optional membership unlocks the majority of the world, skills, quests, and content.
We picked Old School RuneScape because it is one of the best examples of a game becoming bigger than the people who originally made it. The fact that players can set their own goals and spend hundreds—or thousands—of hours pursuing something that sounds completely meaningless from the outside is exactly what makes OSRS special. It's a game where your adventure can be whatever you decide to obsess over.
