Deus EX GOTY Edition

Deus Ex opens with a conspiracy that sounds like a cliché — bioterrorism, a plague vaccine only the rich can get, a shadowy organization pulling strings — and then spends thirty hours proving that every faction you meet is lying to you in a slightly different way, including the one you work for. You play JC Denton, a newly-augmented UNATCO agent sent to stop terrorists who, it turns out fairly quickly, might have a point. What Deus Ex does that almost nothing before it attempted at this scale is refuse to pick a genre. It's a first-person shooter with real gunplay and enemy AI that reacts to noise and light. It's an RPG with skill points for lockpicking, hacking, swimming, and weapon proficiency. It's a stealth game where knocking someone out with a stun prod is often smarter than shooting them. And it's a conversation-and-choice game where talking your way past a guard is a legitimate strategy, not a cutscene.

The level design is built to make all of that true at once: almost every mission has a front door, a back door, a vent, a hackable terminal, and a bribe. Nanotech augmentations — enhanced vision, cloaking, speed, regeneration — layer more options on top rather than replacing your base skills, so a stealth-focused run and a guns-blazing run through the same level can look like two different games. It's rough in places a 2000 release inevitably is — voice acting is uneven, some AI pathing hasn't aged gracefully, and the interface wants a little patience — but none of that undercuts the design underneath it, which modern immersive sims are still explicitly built in the shadow of.

This is the GOTY Edition: the original campaign plus the expanded bonus content added after launch, running clean and DRM-free through GOG with the widescreen and compatibility fixes the original disc release never had. We picked it because it's the direct ancestor of a genre PlayBound already stocks heavily — Deus Ex is the reason 'immersive sim' is a phrase people use, and it holds up as a game to actually play, not just a history lesson to read about.
