OpenLara is exactly the kind of project we want PlayBound to surface: a lovingly rebuilt piece of gaming history that turns something people remember into something they can actually play today. It isn't simply an old game being preserved; it demonstrates what an open-source reimplementation can do when a community refuses to let a classic disappear.
Genuinely free
No trial, no paywalled campaign, no pay-to-win, no cosmetic treadmill. Free means free, forever.
Finished enough to enjoy
Playable and satisfying start to finish today — not a promising alpha you should check back on.
Actively maintained
A release or meaningful commit within the last twelve months. Someone is still looking after it.
Stands on its own merits
Good enough that we would recommend it even if it cost money. Free is not the reason it is here.
High quality only
We cut through free-game noise and only platform games that are actually good. Volume is not a goal.

The open-source modern engine reimplementation of classic Tomb Raider.

OpenLara is an open-source engine recreation of the original Tomb Raider, built from scratch to make the classic 1996 adventure more accessible on modern hardware and across a wide range of platforms. It recreates the core technology behind the original game while adding modern conveniences and enhancements that make revisiting Lara Croft's first adventure considerably easier.
At its heart, OpenLara preserves what made the original Tomb Raider so distinctive. Players explore enormous environments, solve environmental puzzles, platform across precarious gaps, discover hidden rooms, and battle the creatures standing between Lara and her next objective. The emphasis is less on constant combat and more on exploration, navigation, and figuring out how a seemingly impossible environment fits together.
The project is particularly interesting because it demonstrates how far preservation can go beyond simply running an old executable through an emulator. OpenLara provides a modernized foundation while retaining the atmosphere, geometry, movement, and fundamental character of the original experience.
There is also something wonderfully nerdy about the project. This isn't a commercial remaster trying to reinterpret Tomb Raider for a new audience. It's a community-driven technical achievement built by people who clearly care about understanding how the original worked and keeping that experience alive.
OpenLara is an astonishing technical feat of game engine preservation. Timur Gagiev (XProger) recreated the 1996 Tomb Raider engine from scratch, bringing real-time fluid water dynamics, first-person VR mode, split-screen 2-player local co-op, and high-framerate rendering directly into the web browser and desktop with zero friction.
