Do I need the original game?

Yes. OpenPrivateer does not include any copyrighted assets; you must own Wing Commander: Privateer and provide PRIV.TRE and INITCFG.PAK (plus RF.TRE and INITRF.PAK for Righteous Fire).

How does this differ from Gemini Gold?

Gemini Gold is a free Vega Strike remake with its own 3D assets. OpenPrivateer is a faithful reimplementation of the original engine that plays your own original game data.

No — it is a public alpha shipped as rolling nightly builds, so expect rough edges.
