Climb the voxel horizon with a party at your back.
That One Thing
Gliding from a mountain you climbed yourself makes the enormous voxel world feel less generated and more genuinely discovered.
Veloren feels like someone took the best parts of a bunch of ambitious PC games and asked, “What if we just built our own world?” There’s exploration, fast combat, crafting, mounts, dungeons, mining, procedural landscapes, and multiplayer—but what really grabbed us is how alive the world feels. It’s rough in places, still evolving, and that makes discovering it now feel like getting in early on something special.
Worth the cost
Free, or regularly available for $15 or less. Good developers deserve to be paid, and optional cosmetics, expansions, and premium extras are welcome. But we won't list games that sell competitive advantages, disguise a trial as free, or charge again to finish the core experience.
Ready to play
Playable and satisfying today. It can be unfinished; it cannot be unfun. We love supporting indie developers, but prototypes, broken releases, and promises of a future game do not make the cut.
Tested by PlayBound
We install it, launch it, and play it ourselves. We've spent hours building definitive editions and making multiplayer work, because a store-page claim is not the same as a game we can confidently put in front of you.
That One Thing
Every game needs that one thing we'd excitedly tell our friends about. It might be the mechanics, story, art, soundtrack, controls, community, or the way it brings people together. If it doesn't have one, it doesn't make the catalog.

Veloren is a free and open-source multiplayer action-adventure RPG built around a huge procedurally generated fantasy world. Developed by a community of volunteers in Rust, the project draws inspiration from games as varied as Cube World, Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but has gradually developed an identity of its own.
The first thing that stands out is the world itself. Veloren isn't simply a collection of handcrafted levels connected together. Its terrain is procedurally generated and simulated as a connected environment containing enormous mountains, deserts, jungles, forests, oceans, underground cave systems, settlements, ruins, and other locations to discover. The scale encourages wandering simply to see what is around the next mountain.
Exploration is supported by a surprisingly broad collection of RPG systems. Players can discover and equip different weapons, develop combat styles, craft equipment, mine underground for valuable resources, interact with NPCs, and take on enemies ranging from ordinary creatures to powerful dungeon bosses. The combat is fast-paced and action-oriented rather than relying entirely on traditional RPG menu systems.
One of the more memorable features is the ability to tame creatures and use them as companions or mounts. Traveling across a massive procedural world becomes considerably more interesting when you can acquire a creature and actually use it as part of your adventure rather than treating the environment as scenery.
The multiplayer component is equally important. Veloren supports persistent multiplayer servers where players can explore together, fight monsters, trade, gather resources, and simply inhabit the same world. You can also host games yourself, including over LAN, making it possible to create smaller private adventures rather than relying entirely on a central service.
What makes Veloren particularly interesting for PlayBound is its development model. This isn't a commercial MMO with a giant studio and a fixed production schedule. It is a community-built open-source RPG, with players, artists, programmers, translators, and contributors all helping shape the project. The developers explicitly describe the goal as creating a colorful world that can be explored and interacted with in unique ways.
That also means Veloren is very much a living project. Some systems feel surprisingly polished while others clearly show that development is ongoing. Rather than being a finished recreation of another game, it feels like you're watching a community gradually figure out what this enormous world can become.
And that's part of its charm.
We picked Veloren because we wanted to see what happens when an open-source community gets ambitious. It's not just a Minecraft-like, a Cube World clone, or a multiplayer RPG. It's trying to build a whole fantasy world from scratch—and you can already wander around inside it with friends. That combination of ambition, freedom, and community development made it an easy PlayBound pick.

Yes, entirely. Veloren is open-source under GPL-3.0 with no purchases, subscriptions, cosmetics or account requirement.
No, and it does not claim to be. Veloren is pre-1.0 and under very active development. Progression systems and combat balance change between releases and worlds are occasionally reset. What exists is enjoyable, but it is a game in progress.
Yes. Self-hosting is fully supported and free, with no account or licence required, which makes it a good option for a small private world with friends.
It shares the voxel aesthetic but is a different game. Veloren is an action RPG focused on exploration, real-time combat and character progression rather than free-form building.
A dedicated GPU is recommended for comfortable frame rates, alongside a quad-core CPU and 8 GB of RAM. It is more demanding than most games in this catalog.
