A free anime space opera built on the FreeSpace 2 engine, with weapon crafting, multi-lock missiles and a story that remembers your choices.
That One Thing
The 'Shopping' mission makes you race through space for cash to spend on upgrades. Even a galactic war has errands.
Wings of Dawn is a free, standalone anime-flavoured space sim and visual-novel hybrid, built by KingSpoon on the FreeSpace 2 Open engine. It started as a total conversion released in 2010 and was rebuilt into the standalone that exists now: same characters and setting, new story, and, in the developer's words, a restart from a semi-blank state because the first version's ending left little room for a sequel. The current release is the Dec 29, 2018 build containing Episodes 1 and 2, with 10 and 17 missions respectively.
You play Dawn, a girl who is swept into a war that spans the galaxy. The factions are the self-serving human governments, the long-eared and arrogant Cyrvans, and the lumbering Hertak with their many thralls. Missions are the dogfights and escort or assault jobs that the FreeSpace engine is known for, joined to visual-novel cutscenes and character conversation between them, so you spend as much time talking with people as shooting at them.
The developer lists several unusual features: multi-lock aspect missiles that can track more than one target, weapon crafting that lets you build your loadout, and an events system that carries some of your choices into later missions. Difficulty works differently from FreeSpace 2: from medium upward your numbers stay fixed and the game simply spawns more enemies, so veterans can safely push to Hard or Insane. Joystick input is supported alongside keyboard and mouse.
The practical side is demanding in disk space and light on hardware. The archive is about 4.89 GB, the developer asks for 8 GB free, and recommends 4 GB of RAM and a 2 GB OpenGL 3.3 video card; the weakest machine it was tested on was a laptop with an i7-2670QM and a GT 555M. It runs on Windows and Linux, with no official macOS build. The FAQ is candid about content, too: mild swearing, fantasy violence, and some lewd pictures hidden away, plus an optional 18+ patch that is a separate download. It is distributed free, but non-commercial use only, as with all FreeSpace 2 engine conversions.
For PlayBound it is exactly the sort of project we want to keep findable: a huge, free, single-player campaign made by one person on an open-source engine, with art and writing most paid games would envy. It is not a quick install — the official routes go through Knossos or a multi-part archive — and the game has been quiet since 2018, which we say plainly. It is complete in the sense that Episodes 1 and 2 are playable start to finish.
We picked Wings of Dawn because it shows what a single dedicated developer can build when the engine is free and the source code is open: a full anime space opera, visual-novel scenes included, given away for nothing. It is large, a little awkward to install and unfinished as an ongoing series, and we say that plainly — but it is more than a modder's curiosity, it is a complete, standalone story you can fly through tonight.

Minimum
Windows or Linux (macOS builds are 'hopefully later') · any Intel or AMD CPU from the last five years at release · 4 GB RAM · a 2 GB OpenGL 3.3-capable video card (dedicated ATI/Nvidia strongly recommended) · 8 GB free disk space · keyboard, mouse or joystick. The developer's weakest test machine was a laptop with an i7-2670QM and GeForce GT 555M.
Recommended
Not published as a separate tier. The developer recommends a dedicated GPU, and says turning off shadows and deferred lighting in the launcher helps on weaker machines.
Yes. It is completely free and standalone. As with every FreeSpace 2 Open total conversion, the terms of the source release mean it may not be sold commercially.
No. The developer's FAQ says you can install through Knossos or extract the archive and play without owning FreeSpace 2.
The archive is about 4.89 GB (5,252,464,133 bytes on ModDB). It unpacks to about 8.5 GB, and the developer asks for 8 GB of free disk space, so allow about 9 GB to be safe.
A CPU from the last five years at release, 4 GB of RAM, a 2 GB OpenGL 3.3 graphics card (a dedicated ATI/Nvidia card is strongly recommended) and 8 GB of disk. Windows and Linux are supported; macOS is not.
Yes. The developer lists joystick input alongside keyboard and mouse. We have tagged Flightstick Support; gamepads generally work as joysticks through the launcher.
The current release is Episode 2 from December 2018. The developer has not shipped a new episode since, so we do not mark it actively maintained.
No. Wings of Dawn is a single-player game, so there is no multiplayer mode to join or host.
Mostly. The developer's FAQ mentions mild swearing, fantasy violence and some lewd images hidden in the game, plus a separate optional 18+ patch, so we do not tag it Family Friendly.
